Choir and Bells
The Music Department of Davie United Methodist Church is directed by Wesley Pennington and consists of four main branches - The Chancel Choir, The Handbell Choir, the Praise Team, and the Soloists.
The Chancel Choir performs anthems and special holiday pieces primarily for the 11AM Traditional Service. The choir is made up of volunteer singers who come from a myriad of backgrounds and bring to the choir a variety of abilities. The rehearsal schedule is from September thru May with rehearsals on Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the Sanctuary and also on Sunday morning at 10:15 AM in the Sanctuary. During the summer months there are no rehearsals, but the choir is open to any singers who wish to meet on Sunday mornings to lead the congregation in hymn singing. The choir usually prepares special musical presentations for both Christmas and Palm Sunday/Easter often using mixed media and usually featuring special guests artists. During these special seasonal events many congregants join the choir for a "short-term" engagement. We welcome all who have musical talents to come share them with us as we sing together.
The Handbell Choir is a long-time tradition of Davie United Methodist Church. The Handbell Ringers perform for special services as well as for the 11AM Traditional Service once a month when feasible. The Handbell Choir has also been privileged to perform for events outside of the church walls. The handbell choir currently is a three octave configuration with 12 ringers with an added bell capacity for five octaves. We welcome new ringers to our group. Music reading ability is certainly helpful, but not absolutely necessary.
The Praise Team is the musical expression for the 9AM Contemporary Service. The team consists of four singers and a Praise Band comprised of keyboard, drums and multiple guitarists! The Praise Team rehearses at 8AM on Sunday (prior to the service). The style of music is contemporary with a rock/gospel flavor. We welcome those who have musical talents to share them with us.
The Soloists are singers and musicians who have the gift of solo performance. We feature our "home-grown" talent at most services on a rotational basis. These performers put in extra time and display a character of reliability to offer their gifts to the church services. We appreciate their work and enjoy their gifts!
If you would like to participate in any of these areas of worshipful expression, please feel free to contact the church office for further information.
